GPS: list of wearables that measure your location
What is a GPS?
GPS is old technology, but its use in fitness trackers is relatively recent as processors have become more powerful. GPS comprises a network of 29 satellites in orbit and at any given time, an individual should be within four satellites' range to determine a precise location.
The GPS receiver on your watch receives a low-power, high-frequency radio signal from the satellites. With data from enough satellites, the time it takes for a signal to hit your smartwatch can be converted to your distances from the satellite, which is then interpreted into precise coordinates. This enables runners, hikers, and cyclists to quickly record their workout and determine exactly where they are.
Which GPS sensors do smartwatches have?
Smartwatches today have a range of different GPS sensors that are designed to provide users with the most accurate locational information whilst minimising the battery drain.
For example, many Garmin devices are equipped with a GLONASS sensor that works alongside the GPS to provide even better position information. With an additional 24 satellites being utilised, GLONASS compatible receivers are able to acquire satellites up to 20% faster than devices that rely on GPS alone.
Other devices offer even more precise location information with the European GALILEO navigation system that is able to provide a user's location to the nearest metre (in Europe) or the BDS navigation system that works in the China & Asia-Pacific region.
The GPS systems built into smartwatches continue to grow in sophistication and quality. With accurate, real-time location information we're able to see how we perform in the activities that we do outdoors.
Through the Terra API, we provide connections to a range of different devices so that your users can track their location.
