How your clinical information is handled

This page describes how your information is handled when you use clinical or diagnostic services — such as laboratory or biomarker testing — through an application powered by Terra. It supplements Terra's End User Privacy Policy at tryterra.co/end-user-privacy, which continues to apply to your use of Terra-connected applications.Terra's roleWhere an application you use offers clinical or diagnostic services — such as laboratory or biomarker testing, physician-network or clinician-ordered testing, genetic testing, or at-home sample-collection kits — Terra provides the application programming interface that routes the associated orders and results between that application and the laboratories, physician networks, and device or kit partners that provide those services. Terra does not order, perform, supervise, or interpret any test or result, does not exercise clinical judgement, does not hold or handle any sample or kit, and does not establish any provider–patient relationship with you.The clinical data Terra routesClinical data. Where you use a clinical or diagnostic service through an application, Terra routes clinical data, which may include your test orders and requisition details, sample-collection metadata, and the laboratory results, reports, and interpretations produced by the laboratory or provider, together with identifiers needed to route them. Where a genetic or genomic test is offered, this may include genetic data.Who receives your informationTo provide a clinical or diagnostic service, your information is shared among: the laboratory that performs the test; the physician network or ordering provider (where the service involves clinician review or ordering); the device or kit partner (where sample collection uses a kit or at-home device); the application you are using; and Terra, which routes the information between them. Your information may also be disclosed to accreditation bodies and to governmental or regulatory authorities where permitted or required by law.Direct contact about your resultsIn some urgent or critical-result situations, the laboratory or provider may contact you directly about your results, independently of the application you are using. Where this happens, the laboratory or provider is acting on its own responsibility as an independent controller of your information for that purpose.If you are in the United StatesIf you are in the United States and use a clinical or diagnostic service, the laboratory or physician network that provides that service is a HIPAA 'covered entity' and maintains its own Notice of Privacy Practices, which describes how it may use and disclose your protected health information. That notice is provided by the laboratory or provider, not by Terra. Terra is not a covered entity; it routes your information as a technical conduit and, where required, under business associate agreements with the covered entities in the chain.Where your information is processedWhere your service is provided in the United Kingdom or European Economic Area, your information is processed in the United Kingdom, and where a laboratory or provider processes it outside the United Kingdom that transfer is made under appropriate safeguards. Where your clinical service is provided in the United States, your clinical information is processed in the United States.Additional protectionsGenetic testing. Where you use a genetic or genomic testing service, your genetic data is handled subject to additional protections. It is not sold, used for insurance or employment decisions, or used to market to you based on your genetic profile.Physician networks. Where a physician network is involved, its services are for diagnostic assistance and do not create a physician–patient relationship.Collection kits and devices. Where sample collection uses a kit or at-home device, the collection, handling, instructions for use, and any recall are the responsibility of the device or kit partner and you, not Terra.Your rights and general termsTo exercise your privacy rights (such as access, correction, or deletion), contact the application you use — it is responsible for your relationship and your data, and will route your request to the right party. Clinical and diagnostic services available through Terra-connected applications are available only to individuals aged 18 or over.
